About Vanessa

Vanessa is an abstract artist whose practice consists of expressive work influenced by her daily experiences and immediate environment. Her work addresses her relationship with nature and is informed by the philosophical concepts around mark-making.

Vanessa's work is intuitive and spontaneous. The experience of creating is just as important as the final outcome for the artist, using a wide range of colour combinations and qualities with careful but free and expressive mark-making, often using motions of the body as tools to apply paint. Vanessa is interested in how these qualities and combinations behave while in contact with each other and the surface, referencing Cy Twombly and his gestural vocabulary in which each mark and colour is infused with energy. Having a personal connection to her work is something that is important to the artist. She believes that all marks carry an emotional expression of their maker. She uses mark-making as a tool to further understand the world, support her thoughts and express herself through her work.

Vanessa works with mixed media and although she focuses mainly on acrylics, she believes anything in the natural world can be used as a material to make a mark. Various colour combinations and qualities such as texture and scale, allow the audience a chance to personally respond to the work and evoke a feeling or an emotion from the viewer, which is something Vanessa finds extremely intriguing, the fact that everyone responds differently to the work.
